Why Transformer Compatibility Is Critical for EV Charger Installations in Brazil

As the electric vehicle market continues to grow in Brazil, more residential and commercial charging stations are being installed across the country. However, one challenge that is often overlooked is the complexity of Brazil’s electrical infrastructure.

Unlike countries with a unified power distribution system, Brazil has multiple utility voltage standards depending on the region and the local power network. In many installations, transformers are used to adapt the available power supply to meet the requirements of electrical equipment. For EV charging systems, this makes the transformer an essential part of the overall installation—not just an accessory.

An EV charger is designed to operate within specific electrical parameters. Even when the charger is functioning correctly, an incompatible or improperly selected transformer can affect the stability of the power supply. Voltage fluctuations, insufficient transformer capacity, or an unsuitable electrical configuration may prevent the charger from operating as intended or cause it to enter its built-in protection mode.

Recently, our engineering team assisted a customer in Brazil who reported that an EV charger appeared to have failed after installation. After reviewing the installation and conducting technical analysis, we confirmed that the charger itself was operating normally. The investigation showed that the issue originated from the transformer configuration rather than the charger. Once the power supply conditions were properly evaluated, it became clear that the charger had responded as designed to protect both the equipment and the vehicle.

This experience highlights an important point: in many cases, charging issues are not caused by the charger itself but by the compatibility of the surrounding electrical infrastructure. The charger, transformer, power distribution system, grounding, and protective devices all work together as a complete charging system. If any one of these components is not properly matched, the overall performance and reliability of the installation can be affected.

For this reason, transformer selection should be considered during the early planning stage of every EV charging project in Brazil. Before installation, installers and system integrators should verify the local power conditions, evaluate the transformer’s electrical characteristics, and ensure that the complete electrical system is compatible with the charger’s specifications.
